GRADIENT STUDIES

Tests and Trials of Translucent Color
I painted these while planning my mural, Transparent #2. I had an idea of how I wanted to paint it, and these studies helped me figure out the process.
I wanted to work with translucent paint, layering colors so that secondary colors would appear where they overlapped.
The pieces in this series are a record of my tests and trials, trying out two things: what color combinations I wanted and what opacity of paint would achieve the desired effect.
They’re not perfect —they’re not even the same size —these are working paintings. I made them as experiments that helped me break down how I would create the final piece.
In the video above, I move between the studies and the mural itself, showing how the experiments grew into the final piece.
