Phase (Waves)
This is the first body of work I’ve made since moving to Japan.
When I first sat down, I hadn’t painted in months. So I gave myself time. Time to remember the feel of pencil on paper and brush in hand. Time to work through ideas, without knowing where they’ll lead.
Each week I would lay everything out and just look, see what my eye catches. The pressure of a brush, the curve of a line. How two colors overlap.
I’d paint in the morning in natural light, and the pieces began to emerge.
Every piece is built from three lines. The first, in pencil, moves quick, searching for an idea. The second, in sumi ink, defines that idea, giving it weight, texture, and movement. The third, in translucent acrylic, moves freely. It can curve around angles, outline other lines, or break away completely.
I’m interested in the relationship between these lines, how they influence and react with one another, and how each interaction accumulates into a painting that I couldn’t have imagined.
The title, Phase (Waves), comes from these relationships. Like waves, these three lines move independently while constantly affecting one another. They reinforce, interrupt, drift, then come back into alignment.
日本に移ってから制作した、初めてのまとまった作品群です。
最初に机に向かったとき、何か月も絵を描いていませんでした。だから、時間をかけることにしました。紙の上を鉛筆が走る感触や、手にした筆の感触を思い出すための時間。どこへ向かうのかわからないまま、アイデアを試していくための時間です。
毎週、すべてを並べて、ただ眺めました。自分の目がどこに向かうのかを見る。筆の圧力、線の曲線。二つの色が重なり合うところ。
朝、自然光の中で描いていると、少しずつ作品が現れてきました。
一つひとつの作品は、三本の線からできています。最初の線は鉛筆。アイデアを探しながら、素早く動きます。二本目は墨。そのアイデアを定着させ、重さや質感、動きを与えます。三本目は、半透明のアクリル。自由に動きます。角のまわりを曲がり、他の線の輪郭をなぞり、あるいは完全に離れていくこともできます。
私が興味を持っているのは、これらの線の関係です。互いにどのように影響し、反応し合うのか。そして、それぞれの関わりが積み重なって、自分でも想像していなかった一枚の絵になっていくことです。
タイトルの Phase (Waves) は、こうした関係から生まれています。波のように、この三本の線はそれぞれ独立して動きながら、絶えず互いに影響し合います。強め合ったり、遮ったり、離れていったり、そして再び重なり合います。
