Studio Notes -

I'm documenting the first body of work I've made since moving to Japan. These are observations from the studio. Small ideas about drawing, repetition, rhythm, and how paintings take shape.

Day 10 - August 8th - 2026

Memory

I don’t remember everything.

I’m light on details, but I get a good impression.

Emotion is recorded as fluctuations of pressure,

With no hard lines or high color contrast.

A cloud imprinting the sky.

But my body remembers.

Muscle memory learned from repeating the same thing and the same thing.

Practice disguised as experimentation.

Day 9 - August 6th - 2026

I Found Some New Lines

I found some new lines.

One is made with Sumi ink and moves quick, so the ink lags and scrapes across the page.

It remembers everything: a stutter, the brush shifting in hand, each hesitation recorded as motion.

The foundation.

The second is a free line.

If the Sumi ink creates the constraints, this line responds with improvisation.

It can curve around angles, outline other lines, or break away completely.

It’s not bound to the figure, but it leans on it. Stretches across, disappears, then reappears on it.

Two lines of thought … in conversation.

Day 8 - August 4th - 2026

This Could be Something

This could be something or someone.

Traces of light, or a form in motion.

They feel weighted and bound to the earth.

But they read light, defined by line, not by solid form.

I’ve drawn them for years.

It feels good to draw them again.

The motion is familiar, and as I’m working, I remember ideas discovered from countless repetitions.

I don’t overthink.

Day 7 - August 3rd - 2026

A Painting is Physical

A painting is physical, made from material.

An image is made from decisions.

These ideas go everywhere.

They don’t just belong to one piece.

They travel.

A curve, a color, the pressure of a brush.

They show up in flowers. Then birds.

Then Eventually...

やがて

everything you touch.

Day 6 - July 31st - 2026

It’s Been Two Weeks _PT2

I'll know it when I see it.

Those ideas that seem small but open up into new worlds.

Or I think I will.

I've been seeing past ideas that I passed by pop back up to something new.

Can you discover the same thing twice?

I made a new drawing yesterday, and then I saw that same idea on a hard drive from years ago.

Two lines drawn years apart, crossing at the same point

Was it inevitable?

Or was I finally ready to see it?

Day 5 - July 30th - 2026

It’s Been Two Weeks _PT1

So it’s been two weeks.

And I’ve been working on the smallest of things.

A curve, how two lines overlap. The pressure of a brush, a leaf.

I’ll lay everything out and just look. See what my eye catches

The density of color, a motion, a rhythm.

I can tell when I like an idea because I’ll try it over and over again, just to see where it goes.

Day 4 - July 20th - 2026

Summer - 夏

After weeks of rain, summer just hit in Nara.

It's hot and humid. But I kind of enjoy it.

I grew up in the south, so it makes me a bit nostalgic.

Hot days, hot nights. A light breeze that you don't take for granted.

The cicadas just woke up.

And as I'm working, I hear their song build and pulse across the city.

Day 3 - July 17th - 2026

This is what the voice inside my head tells me every time I sit down to make new work. This tone is pretty spot on. Dreamy and knows me too well with a bit of authority.

Two Weeks

When it’s time to start working again, I think of it this way.

You have two weeks to figure things out.

This timeline isn’t a deadline to get things done. It’s permission to mess around and do anything you want.

If you think back to when you first started making things. The reason you make something is to make something.

To sit and work out an idea. To learn, to explore.

It was a time of pure creativity, for fun.

And If you can hold on to that feeling of being open and messing around, it’ll be the easiest way to create new ideas.

And it’s these ideas that push the work forward and build into the next thing and the next thing.

So, you have two weeks.

Day 2 - July 14th - 2026

New Brush -

Vase, flowers, and a stack of oranges.

I made this within the first few weeks of living in Nara.

Using my favorite pencil and getting on good terms with a calligraphy brush.

I’m not that good with small brushes, but I want to paint thin lines, so I’m trying to figure it out.

Day 1 - July 6th - 2026

Where do I Start?

So, where do I start?

First, I need supplies.

I found an art store. It’s kind of close to Nara Park.

We went early, said hi to the deer and viewed a few ancient wonders.

After udon at the temple, we made it to the art store.

I only bought a few things. Some small tubes of paint, Sumi ink, gesso, and drawing paper.

The next morning, I sat and stared at the supplies a bit, thinking about where to start.

But you have to start somewhere.

So I picked up a pencil and started to draw.

Day 0 - July 2nd - 2026

Japan

So, I moved to Japan.

I’ve been here for about a month.

Before that, there was planning, packing, and selling off everything we owned.

So I haven’t painted in months.

And the art supplies I kept are on a boat floating across the Pacific.

It’s finally time to start painting again.

But where do I start?
